In winter, approximately 1,650 people reside in the 8,000-acre gated-community that offers 36 villages with home styles ranging from townhomes to luxury homes. If you like privacy, you may want one of the homes at the top of the community which are privately sited 10-20 minutes from the main gate. Many homes in Desert Mountain feature large parcels of over one-plus acres for added privacy. Prices range from a modest $250,000 for smaller townhomes for sale, to over 5 million for luxury estates for sale in Desert Mountain.
Real Estate Observations. Real estate/ Homes for sale are plentiful in Desert Mountain with over a hundred homes for sale at any given time. And with a nearly 20% turnover in residents each year, plan ahead if you buy here. Although the community is very nice, it is quite a drive from the actual center of Scottsdale so often times buyers love the idea of the tranquility but decide to sell their home after missing the easy access to more restaurants and the city of Scottsdale. So homes that are for sale here typically take a year or more to sell… and two years is not unheard of.
Desert Mountain is essentially a luxurious version of a Sun City Retirement Community, where all the amenities are “in house”, so perfect for buyers looking for that retirement type lifestyle in pretty and more spacious surroundings.
The nearest town to the Desert Mountain Community is Cave Creek, north of Phoenix. The town has a population of around 5,000 but that number goes up during the winter season. One of the more popular things to do in Cave Creek is visit Cave Creek Regional Park. The 3,000-acre park has plenty of hiking and biking trails.
There’s also the Cave Creek Museum with prehistoric artifacts of tools and pottery, which help teach about desert life centuries ago. The museum also has excellent coverage of settlers, miner and military days in the immediate region.
You’ll also find golf courses, MacDonald’s Ranch, the conservation area known as Spur Cross Ranch, and Frontier Town. This Wild West town is great fun. You can see the gallows where justice was administered to outlaws. You’ll find plenty of shops that sell souvenirs, jewelry, clothing along with old west style restaurants.
