The Town of Gilbert is just over 20 miles southeast of Phoenix or rather a 30-minute drive. The population is roughly 250,000 and until recently Gilbert maintained its Old West charm. In fact, the town used to be known as the ”Hay Shipping Capital of the World” due to all of the farmland. The short stretch of the historic downtown area has seen many restaurants and bars move in making it a nightlife hotspot.
However, the downtown area is just a small part of Gilbert with many families relocating to the town. In fact, one study shows Gilbert has the third-lowest percentage of single people among the cities analyzed. On the flip side, Gilbert has the most online dating opportunities in this same study.
The Phoenix suburb is one of the most affordable in the Metro area and offers a ton of green space which is hard to find in Phoenix. The area is known for having low crime and high rates schools and ranch style homes on big grassy lots. The town is thought of as more of a bedroom community at 76 square miles. More major business corporations are located in the City of Chandler, just west of Gilbert. Speaking of the two cities, when it comes to real estate, both areas are comparable in home values and hold their property values more than in some parts of the Phoenix Metro area. Gilbert, though, in general, has more high-end properties and more ranch-style homes. Phoenix natives will say, “Gilbert is a more upscale community”
Gilbert also has three hospitals: Banner Gateway Medical Center, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and Southeast Veterans Affairs Health Center.
Gilbert does not have any airports but is close to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and the Chandler Municipal Airport.
The Gilbert School District serves over 35,000 students at 40 schools across Gilbert, Chandler, and Mesa. In 2018, the district was awarded the “Fourth Best School District in America” by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. As of spring 2019, 13 Gilbert schools earned the “A+ School of Excellence Award” from the Arizona Educational Foundation. A little trivia…the first school in Gilbert was built in 1900 on the southwest corner of Baseline and Cooper
